Welcome to Carpenters Local 423

Stretching from the New York state line in North Central Pennsylvania down through Western Maryland to the Eastern pan handle of West Virginia, Local 423 encompasses some of the most beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, and farmland in the United States.

It is amongst this sometime rugged terrain that the work ethic of our members was developed. From pushing the railroad west to new frontiers, to mining coal for heat and power, forging the steel to shape our country, we are home to some of the hardest working people in America.

A diverse area with small cities and towns. Separated at times by a vast, rural, mountainous countryside. Tied together by a faith-based, family-oriented population. We have major universities and small colleges. A unique infrastructure of roads, bridges, and tunnels. Reservoirs and lakes. Coal and gas-fired powerplants. Wind and Solar farms. Expanding healthcare systems. Preparing to keep up with all the new technologies that the 21st century will reveal and the growth that will come with it.

In November of 2016, four locals from 28 counties in 3 states merged to become Carpenters Local #423, to be centered in Duncansville, PA. Ridgway Local #947, Tyrone Local #950, Cumberland Local #1024, Johnstown Local #1419. Four established locals all with a long rich history and their own industries. Strong locals. Independent locals. It was not our choice.

With the merging of locals, district councils and regional councils across America, the UBC is on the move, in its ongoing process of cutting cost and expanding markets. The carpenters are the trade of the future, partnering with our contractors to prepare ourselves for the rebuilding of this great country and become the most competitive trade in the business.

In four short years we have developed into a very solid local and have established our own identity. With over 1,300 members, we are setting up to capture the new markets of the 21st century.

With a footprint of over 18,000 square miles, Duncansville is strategically located at the crossroads of Interstate 99 and US Route 22, providing easy access to our members at the geographical center of the local. Since 2016, we have tripled our apprenticeship numbers, and have recently completed a 3.5-million-dollar expansion to our training facility.

This will enable us to continue our partnership with our signatory contractors to meet the challenges that lie before us and grow our market share.
